Montgomery County police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that left three people dead and sent five others to local hospitals. The police department says officers responded around 3:20 a.m. Sunday to a report of a collision on East-West Highway in Silver Spring.

Montgomery County Police said eight people were in a vehicle that crashed on East-West Highway near Rosemary Hills Drive, which is near the District line and less than a mile northwest of the Silver Spring Metro station. Authorities said three occupants of the vehicle were dead at the scene.

Four townhouses were damaged Saturday afternoon after a child played with matches and caused a blaze in Montgomery County, Maryland. County fire spokesman Pete Piringer says the fire caused $800,000 in damage along the 9600 block of Horizon Run Drive in Montgomery Village.

Montgomery County Police say more sex offense charges have been filed against a substitute teacher accused of sexual abuse of a minor. Fifty-year-old Jose Pineda of Gaithersburg was charged Friday with three counts of third-degree sex offense and three counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

New sex abuse charges were filed Friday in the case of a former substitute teacher who had worked at 20 Montgomery County Public Schools since the fall of 2013 and is accused of having inappropriate contact with students. The school system earlier this month notified parents that it continues to look into the employment record of Jose Pineda, the teacher who was arrested for conduct at Roberto Clemente Middle School in Germantown.
