Tensions between the Montgomery County Council and the school system are a staple of annual budget deliberations, but a proposal to spend $31 million to renovate the council's aging office building has turned into more of a schoolyard brawl. Board of Education President Patricia O'Neill on Monday called out the council and accused members of exercising poor political timing by considering the project when school officials are trying to win additional construction money from state lawmakers to address overcrowding .

The Maryland parents who made national headlines in January for letting their 6- and 10-year-old children walk the neighborhood without an adult have been accused of "unsubstantiated" child neglect following an investigation by Montgomery County Child Protective Services. Danielle and Alexander Meitiv, who consider themselves "free-range" parents, say they plan to appeal the decision, The Washington Post reported .

The Maryland parents who let their children walk home from a park in Silver Spring were found responsible for "unsubstantiated" child neglect in a decision that has not fully resolved their clash with authorities over their views on parenting and children's safety. Danielle and Alexander Meitiv hoped the nationally debated case - which has lit up social media and brought a dozen television film crews to their home - would be dismissed following a two-month investigation by Montgomery County Child Protective Services.
